Dan Gilbert: The surprising science of happiness
Summary
Dan Gilbert defended ,"There are two kinds of happiness, one is natural happiness, which means we get what we wanted so we are happy, the other one is synthesized happiness. Synthesized happiness is that we don't get what we wanted but we are happy in the end. According to the data, the levels of happiness of this two kinds are equal after 3 months.
The reason why is we have impact bias. Most of us overuse our experience simulators so that we image different outcomes are more different than they in fact really are. That is to say,the other option is not as bad as we believe. In addition,we synthesize happiness,so we are happy. And, the option we preferred is not actually as good as we think. Synthesize happiness make us love what we choices more than when we haven't make the choices. It is changed by the time we make decisions.Follow the phenomenon, we infer that choices are friends of natural happiness but enemies of synthesize happiness.Once we have choices to switch our decision,we struggle that weather we should change or not.As a result,we don't like our decisions and deeply dissatisfied.
In conclusion,we maximum the differences between two options. Our preferences push us so hard that we ignore our true values. Then, we can't be happy cause we can't always get what we want. Our irreversible choices bounded our longings and worries so we can be happy. That is to say, if we don't long and worry that much,we could have achieved what we wanted to achieve.Of course,be happy.
What can listener learn from the talks?
Sometimes,we makes ourselves unhappy by longing and worries too much.So we should know those true values first and then we make choices. The outcomes will always be right when we are not violate those true values. As a result,we don't have to be panic when things are not matching our expectations. Then,we will be happy.Take choosing departments of university for example. When I chose the department,I was in fears and pains.I don't know weather I chose the department right or not. What if I chose wrong one? Does that means I will be miserable for the rest of my life? After one year in university,I realize I can learn whatever I want, no matter what I major in.There are many ways to get it. The outcomes are not that difference.
